Mumbai-based Liger Mobility has unveiled its self-balancing electric scooters at the Auto Expo 2023. Christened Liger X and Liger X Plus, the e-scooters come with a bunch of unique features that are unheard of in our market: Feet on footboard – FootFreeStop: Thanks to its self-balancing tech, riders do not need to put their feet down while riding through traffic or when coming to a halt.
ReverseRide: And this also means you don’t have to use your feet even when reversing the e-scooter.
LearnerMode: Since the Liger balances itself, it is a great vehicle to learn too. And in this mode, the top speed is limited to ensure safety.
The AutoBalance feature of the Liger electric scooter has been designed smartly too. At higher speeds, the features goes into standby mode, and activates at low speeds or when the e-scooter is stationary. Furthermore, the rider can manually activate or deactivate the system according to their needs even at low speeds.
Though Liger Mobility has not revealed the technical specifications of the e-scooters, both will have a claimed top speed of 65kmph and liquid-cooled battery packs. While the X variants will have a detachable battery with a claimed range of 60km and a charging time of three hours, the X Plus will feature a non-detachable unit with a claimed range of 100km and a charging time of 4.5hours. The company will offer fast-charging on both models as an optional extra.
The Liger X and the Liger X Plus come with 4G connectivity and are GPS-enabled, and come with a dedicated app that shows the basic data as well as features tow/theft detection, service reminders and even accident alerts. Liger’s top variant will also come with a TFT console that packs navigation and call/SMS alerts.
Liger Mobility’s design is also unique, with a blend of retro and modern elements. While the silhouette of the e-scooter is quite retro, the triangular headlight with the horizontal DRL and digital console adds modernity to the design.
The Liger X and the Liger X Plus will go on sale later this year, with the bookings slated to commence by mid-2023. While the company is yet to comment on the pricing of the products, we expect them to cost Rs 1.70 lakh (X) and Rs 1.90 lakh (X Plus) (both ex-showroom) respectively.

So the Auto Expo 2023 has begun and electric makers are out there going all guns blazing. Liger Mobility has introduced what it calls as the world’s first AutoBalancing electric scooters called as Liger X and Liger X+.
The Liger X will have the ability to self-balance itself when at standstill or at lower speeds. This feature will go to standby as soon as the rider picks up speed. The user will also have the option of turning AutoBalance tech off (even for low speeds). This, the company says, will enhance safety and comfort of the rider and offer an experience never seen on any other 2-wheeler yet!
A feather in the hat for Liger is that the X’s AutoBalancing tech has been designed in-house in India – both hardware and software – offering a big boost to Make in India initiative.
Coming to the vitals – the X will have a top speed of 65 kph and a range of 60 km on full charge. The X+ will have the same top speed but a higher range of 100 km. Company claimed charging time for the X (which comes with a detachable battery) is under 3 hours whereas the X+ (it gets a non-detachable battery) will take 4.5 hours for an optimum charge. Liger adds that it will offer Fast charging options for both the scooters at an additional charge.
Other key features of Liger X include 4G and GPS functionality, live location traceability, ride history along with smart alerts like Accident, Tow, service reminder, etc. In addition the X+ will also get turn-by-turn navigation and the rider can also view phone calls and messages on the TFT display.

Liger Mobility, a Mumbai-based start-up, unveiled today two electric scooters – the Liger X and Liger X+, which the company claims are the world’s first auto-balancing electric scooters. The patented technology enables a host of industry-first features, claims the company, including FootFreeStop, which allows the rider to keep his or her feet on the footboard, even in stop and go traffic. ReverseRide helps riders reverse the scooters like a car; and there is Learn2Ride learner mode and over-the-air updates (OTA) as well. The auto balancing feature is intended to work when the vehicle is on standby mode. A rider can also manually activate and deactivate this feature, based on his or her requirement at lower speeds. Ashutosh Upadhyay, Co-founder, Liger Mobility said all aspects of Liger X and Liger X+’s auto balancing technology, including the hardware and software, have been developed in-house. Vikas Poddar, Co-founder, Liger Mobility added that he expects these products and the technology to further catalyse India’s electric revolution. The two new electric scooters will be available in five colours, and will have a top speed of 65 kmph. Range wise, the Liger X is expected to deliver a range of 60 km, while Liger X+ promises a range of 100 km, said the company. Although both the e-scooters are powered by liquid-cooled Lithium-ion battery packs, the Liger X sports a detachable battery pack that “charges to an optimum under three hours”, while, Liger X+ has a built-in non-detachable battery that charges to an optimum under 4.5 hours, claimed the company. कब होंगे लॉन्च?
Liger X और Liger X+ इलेक्ट्रिक स्कूटर्स मिड 2023 में लॉन्च होंगे और इनकी बुकिब भी उसी समय शुरू हो जाएगी। इनकी डिलीवरी 2023 के दूसरे हाफ में शुरू होगी।
कितनी कीमत होगी चुकानी?
लाइगर मोबिलिटी ने अब तक Liger X और Liger X+ की कीमतों का खुलासा नहीं किया है। पर एक रिपोर्ट के अनुसार Liger X की कीमत 90,000 रुपये के आसपास हो सकती है। Liger X+ की कीमत इससे कुछ ज़्यादा होगी।

Liger Mobility has unveiled the Liger X and Liger X+ electric scooters at the ongoing Auto Expo 2023. Both electric scooters feature the company’s patented AutoBalancing technology that enables the products to balance automatically. This feature is aimed to enhance rider safety, comfort, and convenience. The AutoBalancing System is intended to help the rider balance the scooters at low speeds or when the vehicle is stationary. The rider can also has also manually activate and deactivate the AutoBalancing function.
Apart from AutoBalancing, the Liger X and Liger X+ come with the ReverseRide and Learner mode functions. The former lets the rider reverse the electric scooter using the engine power. Meanwhile, the Learner mode capitalises on AutoBalancing along with limiting the speed of the vehicle. The company will also deliver over-the-air updates (OTA) to further enhance the product.
Speaking about the new products, Ashutosh Upadhyay, Co-founder, Liger Mobility, said that all aspects of Liger X and Liger X+’s AutoBalancing technology, including the hardware and software, have been developed in-house. Liger Mobility claims to make learning to ride an e-scooter safer thanks to its self-balancing technology
Liger Mobility, a Mumbai-based technology start-up is looking to disrupt the two-wheeler market with what it claims to be the first-of-its-kind made-in-India solution – self-balancing technology for the two-wheeler segment. The company has showcased its first product – Liger X – likely to be retailed at around Rs 90,000 (post FAME subsidies) once it is launched. The highlight of the e-scooter in addition to the usual features in an EV is the ability of the two-wheeler to balance itself with absolutely no intervention needed by the rider. This it says will bring in many more potential customers who have never ridden a two-wheeler before and thus cut down on their learning curve or fear for balancing the two-wheeler. Founded by Vikas Poddar, a graduate from IIT Madras and an MBA from ISB, and Ashutosh Upadhyay, a graduate of IIT Kharagpur aim to make two-wheelers safer — and in turn also save precious lives. It was this journalist who had broken the story about the start-ups self-balancing scooter in 2019. Over the last three years, the Founders have been working relentlessly to perfect their solution and ensure a full-fledged product. The strategy however has changed. In an interaction with Express Mobility, Poddar and Upadhyay share their thoughts. Edited Excerpts.How much investments have you raised so far and how big is your team?
Poddar: We have raised over a million dollars (Rs 9 crore) so far. The funds have come from established incubators, Angel investors, and Grants. We have been fairly innovative and extremely efficient with capital usage. Given the nature and complexity of the problem we were attacking, we realised that time was a more important resource for us than funds.What is your go-to-market strategy? Will you look at the D2C model or establish your own sales and service network?
Poddar: We will start with experience centres in select cities to establish and control the end-to-end process right from experience, order, delivery, and post-sales. Subsequently, we will scale up our distribution through dealerships that share our values.What is your manufacturing strategy? Will you invest in your own manufacturing set-up or look at contract manufacturing partners?
Upadhyay: Our focus is on design, IP, software, hardware, ai, assembly and quality. While we have designed and developed all our components in-house, we will not be manufacturing our entire BOM (bill of materials). The approach is to collaborate with experienced manufacturing partners to productionise and scale our designs. We will have our own assembly lines. Our custom components will be manufactured via existing setups of our component manufacturing partners.What will be the incremental cost vs the competition (without self-balancing tech)?
Poddar: Liger X will be priced at around Rs 90,000 (Including FAME subsidy). Given the variations in specs of the entire bill of materials for different vehicles in the market, it will be hard to make an apple-to-apple comparison.Is your product completely ready to be commercially sold, or what preparations will you need?
Upadhyay: The product is in the Homologation and Validation Stage. The pre-orders will start by mid-2023 and deliveries towards the end-2023. The milestone of homologation, tooling, and assembling line setup and production pilot will be completed before the pre-orders and delivery.A lot of many start-ups have taken the route of showcasing the product, and opening bookings but have been unable to meet the delivery commitments. How would you look at that situation?
Upadhyay: While we are aware of the approach, we do not subscribe to the idea. Over the years, we have received a lot of interest from users who wish to purchase our vehicle. The current unveil is for letting our potential users know that building a high-quality automotive product entails strict adherence to an industry-standard approach that has proven the test of time. We will continue to respect the process and will not be taking pre-orders unless we are very close to making deliveries.Will you be open to sharing your self-balancing tech with other players?
Poddar: There are no such plans as of now. We may consider strategic partnerships and collaborations to scale across geographies and segments in the long run.What are your future plans and will you need to raise additional funds?
Poddar: We are well capitalised for our current plans. And over the next 3 years, we will be raising $30-50 million (Rs 250 crore to 412 crore) to ramp up sales in the domestic and export markets. We will also be focussing on autonomous features, which will be relevant for two-wheeler shared mobility markets.
