THETIMESOFINDIA – Liger X: World’s first self-balancing scooter and why it doesn’t fall, explained

While the 2023 Auto Expo saw multiple showcases by major manufacturers such as the Maruti Suzuki EVX, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Kia EV9, a mumbai-based startup, called  Liger Mobility , gave patrons something truly special. The company unveiled the  Liger X  and Liger X+ scooters at the expo, which are claimed to be the world’s first auto-balancing e-scooters. This means that the scooters can come to a standstill and remain self-balanced without any support from the rider. The concept is truly a game changer and TOI Auto got in touch with the founders to know more about the auto-balancing scooters and how they were developed, what makes it work? Liger Mobility, co-founder, Vikas Poddar says , “Liger uses AI algorithms to dynamically shift the Center of Gravity of the vehicle in order to ensure that the vehicle stays balanced. The AutoBalancing processor collects over 9,000 data points per second from the vehicle, which are processed using our proprietary AI algorithms which ensure that the vehicle stays balanced when AutoBalancing is activated.”   The data points are gathered by the AutoBalancing processor via multiple sensors placed around the scooter. Their proprietary algorithm uses the data and leverages gyroscopic principles to ensure the vehicle remains upright. Furthermore, the self-balancing remains enabled for up to 5-7 kmph, increasing riding comfort. The system goes on standby mode after the 7 kmph threshold and reactivates at lower speeds. Poddar added, “We have tested our AutoBalancing tech for over 10,000 hours including lab and real world conditions and various road conditions. The liquid cooled battery pack is developed in collaboration with a local partner, and their packs have been tested for over 30,000 kms.” Production for the Liger X and the Liger X+ is expected to go underway by the end of 2023 at the company’s plant in Aurangabad. “We are looking at a capacity of 20,000 auto-balancing vehicles in the first year, which will be ramped up to a capacity of 100,000 units annually in the subsequent 2 years.” Poddar told TOI Auto. In terms of physical architecture, the Liger scooters get a tubular steel frame, front telescopic suspension and dual springs at the rear. It has a seat height of 765 mm and the electric drivetrain gets a 12-inch hub motor offering a top speed of 65 kmph. Poddar tells us that the liquid cooled battery pack in the Liger X offers a real world range of 60 kms and the bigger pack in the Liger X+ offers 100 km range. Another difference in the models is that the lower variant gets an LCD display and the X+ gets a 5-inch TFT screen. Both the Liger X and X+ are OTA update enabled which will help maintain the AutoBalancing algorithms and constantly optimise the vehicle control unit and related operating systems.

Auto Balancing technology enables the scooters to balance automatically enhancing rider safety, comfort and convenience compared to any other scooter available globally.

Liger Mobility’s Liger X and Liger X+ will be available in 5 exciting colourways -Grey, Polar White, Blue, Titanium and Red.
Liger Mobility’s Liger X and Liger X+ will be available in 5 exciting colourways -Grey, Polar White, Blue, Titanium and Red.

New Delhi: The Mumbai-based engineering and technology company Liger Mobility has unveiled Liger X and Liger X+ , the world’s first AutoBalancing electric scooters. This technology enables the scooters to balance automatically enhancing rider safety, comfort and convenience compared to any other scooter available globally.

Both the scooters were unveiled on Day 1 of Auto Expo 2023. The AutoBalancing technology enables a host of industry-first features like: Feet on footboard – FootFreeStop to ride stress free even in crowded traffic; Reverse like a car with ReverseRide – No more backpedalling for reversing; Learner mode – Learn riding a 2-wheeler confidently with Learn2Ride - which capitalises on AutoBalancing along with limiting the speed of the vehicle to ensure anyone can learn riding in a controlled and safe manner; and Over-the-air updates (OTA) – The vehicle keeps getting better with time.

The AutoBalancing System is intended to address the need for balancing at low speeds or when the vehicle is stationary. At higher speeds, a 2-wheeler is inherently stable, so the AutoBalancing feature goes on standby. Rider also has control to manually activate and deactivate AutoBalancing according to the requirement even at lower speeds.

Ashutosh Upadhyay, co-founder of Liger Mobility, said, “Liger Mobility’s team of passionate engineers have worked hard over the last several years to make our AutoBalancing technology for two-wheelers technically and financially viable. All aspects of Liger X and Liger X+’s AutoBalancing technology, including the hardware and software, have been developed in-house, further underlining India’s ambition, determination and quality of engineering talent.”

Vikas Poddar, co-founder of Liger Mobility, added, “India is amongst the world’s largest two-wheeler markets by volume and also the most dynamic and diverse. With the Government’s thrust towards adoption of electric vehicles, and the increasing awareness amongst the Indian consumers, the Indian E2W market is already expanding at an unprecedented pace. Liger X and Liger X+, with the unique AutoBalancing technology, promise to further catalyse this electric revolution. This is the start of an amazing journey, and we believe our technologies have the potential to form the foundation for advanced two-wheelers of the future.”

Liger Mobility’s Liger X and Liger X+ will be available in 5 exciting colourways -Grey, Polar White, Blue, Titanium and Red. Both variants will have a top speed of 65 kmph, while the Liger X will deliver a range of 60 kms, Liger X+ promises a range of 100 kms.

The Liger X and Liger X+ are powered by liquid-cooled Lithium-ion battery packs built for Indian conditions. More than 2 lakh data points are collected each day from each battery, and advanced algorithms ensure thermal safety and predictive maintenance. Liger X sports an easily detachable battery pack that charges to an optimum under 3 hours, while, Liger X+ has a built-in non-detachable battery that charges to an optimum under 4.5 hours. Fast charging options for both variants will be available at additional cost.

Both the variants from Liger Mobility are 4G and GPS-enabled, and will come with an app that enables the rider to see the live location of the vehicle, ride history, battery percentage and temperature. The rider will also receive smart alerts like Tow, Accident, service reminders etc.

In addition, the Liger X+ will feature turn-by-turn navigation, and will also enable the user to view phone calls and messages on the scooter’s TFT display.

The unique design language of Liger X and Liger X+ is hard to miss. The juxtaposition of strength and style is demonstrated with a distinctive design that is inspired by the majestic beast Liger. A contemporary design with softer body form that exemplifies the agility, and signature LED inspired by the eyes exhibits the curiosity of the beast. The design language aims to encapsulate a technologically-sound product.
